Our history is rich and varied, and our journey is one of the reasons we've become Rutherford's premier supplier of concrete and aggregate.
It all began back in 1950 when husband and wife team Bernard (Bernie) and Nona Kauter ran an operation supplying 90% of the gravel requirements for the Hexham Bridge construction. At the time, there were only a few quarries in the Maitland area, so Bernie became one of the major and reputable gravel suppliers to the building industry.

Product delivery and installation are separate parts of a project. Before ordering concrete, arrange the workers and equipment needed to place, compact and finish it. Concrete sleeper, block and landscaping projects may also require a suitably qualified installer, depending on the size and structural requirements of the work.
The correct retaining wall system depends on the wall height, soil conditions, drainage, nearby structures and any loads placed behind the wall. Concrete sleepers, Lego blocks and Burly Blocks are available for different applications, but larger or structurally significant walls may require engineering, professional installation and council approval. These requirements should be checked before ordering materials.
Consider the aggregate colour, stone size, surrounding materials and where the finished surface will be used. Maitland Ready Mixed Concrete offers options including Basalt, Teralba Blue, Pearl Quartz, River Gravel and Cowra White. Samples should be viewed before making a final decision, as the appearance of exposed concrete is also affected by placement and finishing.
Different products are intended for different layers and applications. Fill sand and subbase products may be used when preparing foundations, coarse sand can be used for paving, blue metal is commonly selected for drainage, and sandy loam can support turf and garden areas. Decorative gravel is available for driveways, pathways and garden features. Tell our team how the material will be used so we can recommend suitable options.
Bagged concrete can be suitable for small jobs such as fence posts, garden edging and minor repairs. Ready-mixed concrete is generally more efficient for driveways, slabs, footings and other projects requiring a larger, consistent volume. The decision should also consider how quickly the concrete can be placed and whether the site is accessible to a delivery truck.
Check the complete route from the street to the unloading area. Consider driveway width, turning room, overhead powerlines, trees, steep slopes, soft ground, recently filled areas and underground services. A loaded truck is heavy and requires firm, stable access. Our fleet includes mini, six-wheel, eight-wheel and ten-wheel concrete trucks, allowing us to assess different delivery requirements.
The ground, formwork and reinforcement should be complete and checked before delivery. You should also have enough workers, tools and placing equipment ready to unload, compact and finish the concrete within the available time. If a pump or wheelbarrows are required, these should be organised before the truck arrives.
Slump describes the workability of fresh concrete and how easily it can be placed and compacted. Concrete discharged directly by chute may require different properties from concrete placed using a pump or wheelbarrows. Tell us how the concrete will be moved into position so an appropriate mix can be supplied. Water should not be added on-site without approval, as this can affect the strength, durability and finished appearance.
For a rectangular slab, multiply the length by the width and depth in metres to calculate the volume in cubic metres. Measurements should be taken from the prepared site because uneven excavation, varying depths and movement in the formwork can increase the actual volume required. Our concrete calculator can provide an initial estimate, and our team can help you review the measurements before ordering.
The appropriate mix depends on the application, required strength, exposure conditions, finish and method of placement. Maitland Ready Mixed Concrete supplies strengths ranging from 20 MPa to 50 MPa, along with exposed, polished, stencil, stamp and block-fill mixes. If an engineer or building plan specifies a concrete grade, those requirements should be provided when ordering.
